Introduction
There’s something to be said for the freedom of working remotely. You don’t have to leave your house or apartment, you can wear what you want, and you’re not tied to a desk if that isn’t your thing. But with this freedom comes new challenges—or at least, new opportunities for procrastination and unproductive days spent scrolling through Instagram. I’ve been working from home full-time since last fall and while it’s been great (and way cheaper than renting an office), it hasn’t always been easy. Here are some things I’ve learned along the way that have helped me stay productive when working from home:
Make a to-do list.
- Make a to-do list.
- Prioritize your tasks, and break large ones into small steps.
- Set deadlines for each task, so that you can see how much progress you’re making throughout the day/week/month.
- Don’t forget to reward yourself when you complete a task!
Create an office or work space.
- Create an office or work space.
- A space that is comfortable and conducive to work is essential, especially if you’re going to be working from home full time. Make sure it has a door so you can close it when you need to focus, as well as being quiet and free from distractions (such as pets). A good desk and chair are also important–you’ll want one that fits your body type, but also allows for ergonomic posture while sitting at the computer for extended periods of time.
Lighting should be set up so that it helps increase productivity rather than hinder it by making everything harder to see clearly on screen; this means having adequate lighting over both shoulders if possible (if not then use lamps instead). Having power nearby with outlets within reach will make sure devices are always charged up when needed most! Internet access is another necessity since this will allow us access anywhere we go within our home city limits without needing any additional equipment beyond what we already own (like laptops).
Collaborate with others.
- Collaborate with others.
- The easiest way to stay productive when working from home is to find someone else who also works remotely, or a team that does. You can collaborate on projects, share ideas and feedback, and even work together in real time if you’re using the same tools.
- If you don’t have someone nearby who fits this description (or even if you do), there are still ways for remote workers to collaborate effectively over long distances. Tools like Slack or Skype allow users from all over the world to communicate seamlessly while working on projects together–and they’re free!
Schedule breaks and meals.
When you’re working from home, it can be easy to get caught up in the flow of your work and forget about taking breaks. However, scheduling regular breaks is essential for staying productive and healthy!
- Schedule your breaks: Set aside time every hour or two (depending on how long you want each break) where you will stop working and do something else for 15-20 minutes. The best way to do this is by setting an alarm on your phone or computer calendar so that it reminds you when it’s time for a break.
- Take advantage of natural break times: If possible, take advantage of natural breaks such as meal times or any other daily routines like showering or commuting (if applicable). If these aren’t already scheduled into your day plan then try adding them in now so that they become part of your routine from here on out!
Take advantage of co-working spaces and coffee shops.
Co-working spaces are a great way to meet other people, and they can be an excellent place to work. But if you’re going to meet someone in person, make sure that you have a private space for the meeting.
Coffee shops are another good option for staying productive when working from home (or anywhere else). They offer low costs, free wifi and plenty of seating options–and sometimes even outlets! However, if there’s no way around it and your only option is Starbucks or another crowded coffee shop with bad Wi-Fi then maybe consider taking advantage of their free refills instead.
Working remotely doesn’t mean you have to be less productive
By now, you know that working remotely can be a great way to increase your productivity. But there are still some challenges that come with being at home all day. Here are some tips for overcoming these challenges and staying productive when working from home:
- Set yourself up for success. You’re going to be spending a lot of time at home, so why not make it as comfortable as possible? Get rid of clutter, clean up your space and make sure everything is in its place so that you don’t waste any time looking for things later on down the line (or worse yet–spending hours trying to find what should have been right under your nose).
- Stay focused on your goals by setting aside dedicated work times throughout each day where nothing else matters except getting stuff done! This will allow you time away from distractions like social media posts or internet browsing…and also help prevent burnout later on down the line when things get stressful because there’s always something new coming up next week!
Conclusion
There are many benefits to working remotely, but it can also be difficult to stay productive. With the right tools and strategies, however, you can make your home office feel like a real workplace.
